Book review: Buffy Sainte-Marie: The Authorized Biography by Andrea Warner
2026-04-05 BOOK-REVIEWOK, so this one’s a bit complicated. I picked the book up on a whim in 2025, after having been a long-time fan of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s music—in particular, I’m most familiar with her album Coincidence and Likely Stories. Although I didn’t know much about her, her music and activism always seemed very much like my kind of jam, and so I was keen to learn more. I checked the book out, and had an excited exchange with the cashier, who was surprised and delighted to meet another Buffy fan.
A few pages in, and the book had kicked off with some very heavy details regarding abuse she suffered during childhood, interspersing them with bubbling praise for her natural musical talent. I felt the need to look up some details on this, so headed to her Wikipedia page. That’s when I found out: in 2023, a CBC investigation revealed Buffy’s claims to indigenous American heritage to be false. The fall-out from that was on-going, as one by one, her awards and honours were being stripped from her. Heading to a YouTube music video of hers, I found comment after mocking comment praising the “beautiful Native Italian music”.
This obviously immediately cast a shadow on my reading experience. I know very little about the Native American peoples & cultures, or their place in American society today. I can’t say whether her actions over the years have done more harm than good; whether she sucked up the oxygen meant for others, or whether she wielded her influence to the benefit of those she claimed to represent. The CBC investigation even paints the stories of abuse in a different light, implying that they might have been unfounded accusations backed by a legal threat intended to protect her career opportunities. At every point during my reading, my mind kept coming back to that legal threat, the uncertainty, and being unsure whether she was a victim who rose above the harsh sufferings of the world, or a shrewd actor who manipulated the truth to propel her career forward. I’m still not sure.
As for the book itself: while it was eventually an interesting read, it was often so despite itself. It is breathless in its praise of Buffy, which gets old fast; as I already mentioned, it took only a few pages of this to send me to the internet in search of alternative sources. We’re constantly told how she is both humble and gifted, and her work both under-rated and groundbreaking. As the story reaches each album release, we get to hear some of the back-story of the songs, which is quite interesting, but we’re also presented with a mini-review of the album, as the author takes the time to lavish praise on some of the notable songs. I’ve always had a bit of a problem with music journalism; it just seems to me impossible to describe why a song is good without sounding pompous, and there’s definitely some of that here.
The book is at its best, though, when talking about the other work that Buffy has done. The highlights for me were learning about her appearances on Sesame Street, and her work with the Nihewan Foundation and Cradleboard Teaching Project, both of which she founded. This is what I was there for: inspiring stories about Native American activism. With these projects, Buffy’s impact seems genuine, as she helped educate a generation of children on the topic of Native American culture, and increased their representation in the mainstream media.
At the time of writing, I’ve yet to watch the CBC exposé on her ancestry, but I do intend to, and that might change my perspective. For now, I feel like Buffy Sainte-Marie’s impact will continue to be re-evaluated by society as time goes by, either due to more information emerging, or due to time dulling the immediate shock of the betrayal. While this book provides an interesting snap-shot of how her life was viewed before the CBC investigation, it wears its biases on its sleeve, and leaves me hoping that one day we’ll get a more full picture of both the positive and negative sides of this remarkable and controversial woman’s career.
